“I would want someone to come here and experience what I have because I feel that this is such a major thing in my life. I feel that this conference has been pretty life changing for me. I feel that for me going out of my comfort zone and meeting new people right at the start really made this conference for me. I think that doing the play, speaking in front of everyone, coming here on my own with no friends and meeting new people was a good thing because I was able to do stuff that I never would do at home.”
Ben, St. John’s Prep Danvers, USA
“ASLFL is a life changing experience, which has greatly benefited me as a leader and as a person. Before coming here, I would never have been able to view myself as someone who had the ability to change the world, but with the help of all the Facilitators and other delegates, I have faith in myself to go back into my community and make my city a better place. Without the people I have met at ASLFL, I would not have the confidence in myself that I have today.”
Clíodhna, St. Dominic’s Grammar School, Northern Ireland

“After attending the Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life program for 2 years I am certainly a better person and most importantly a better leader within myself. From the junior staff, facilitators, staff and delegates they are all amazing individuals. The initial thought of being thrown into a conference where you don’t know anybody is terrifying until your one hour in after meeting everybody. They are all so lovely and welcoming and not one person judges another individual. There’s always a fast connection between everyone and when you leave ASLFL you don’t leave with friends you leave with a second family.”
Chloe, Oldham Sixth Form College, England
“The Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership For Life conference is probably the best conference I have been to, as I came here expecting it to be a boring conference about how we could be better people in society and be sitting in a lecture hall all day, yes we did do this, but it wasn’t just in a classroom setting, we got to go to the outside world and apply our new profound skills and there was always activities planned for us every day. I am highly grateful for everything I have learned here!”
Angel, Loreto College Crumlin, Ireland
“Participating in this 8 day programme allowed me to become a much more confident and bright individual. Each lecture about leadership has shaped me into a new person. I highly recommend taking part in this summer programme as a delegate and I promise you, you will not regret it!”
Magda, Ashfield Girls’ High School, Northern Ireland
“As a first year delegate in the Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life program, I was nervous of meeting new people in the beginning, however as soon as I stepped in the door to collect my information pack I was greeted with warm smiles and many friendly faces. This conference is perfect for anyone who is seeking to grow as a person and meet new people. This program will teach you to challenge preconceptions and push you out of your comfort zone, it will also teach you all this by using fun and interesting challenges and games. Over the entire conference I was never bored or disappointed.”
Callum, Piper’s Hill College, Ireland

I will forever be grateful to the conference and the people involved for playing a huge role in who I am today. I have memories, lessons and stories to last a lifetime. It has taught me to appreciate differences in people and learning to embrace them. I have loved my time spent with ASLFL. They have become my family and I am so blessed.”
Caoimhe, Mercy Secondary School, Inchicore, Ireland
“I especially enjoyed the trip to Microsoft, this was something I’ve never experienced before and I was just astonished at the facility. The tour guide was fantastic and so was the speaker and activities in DreamSpace.
If I could recommend this conference to everyone then I definitely would and it’s a shame that everyone can’t go through the same experience that we have this past week. I am absolutely honoured to be able attend ASLFL and even more honoured to be able to come back for a second year.”
Harrison, Great Sankey High School, England
“The decision to decide to come to ASLFL was a daunting one, but rewarding nonetheless. It was quite possibly the best decision I have ever made. This conference not only changed me for the better but changed how I look at the world. The 2019 conference is now my second year attending and I have been given the incredible opportunity to learn not only about myself but about different countries, cultures, languages and many more. I know for a fact this will stay with me for life. So take that risk in coming to the Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life program as you will not regret it.”
Carys, Ashfield Girls’ High School, Northern Ireland
“My personal experience at the 11th Annual Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life International Youth Conference 2019 could best be described as one which has profoundly impacted me to become an empowering and progressive young leader. In my role as Coordinator of Evening Programme, I had the opportunity to develop and utilise skills such as organisation, delegation and communication. As a matter of fact, I excitedly anticipate this conference every summer because it instils a sense of confidence and motivation within me to commit myself and my communities towards a better, fairer future. I would encourage any young person searching for an opportunity to kickstart a humanitarian / professional career and develop their character to attend this conference.”

I came to this conference intending to build on my leadership skills but I’m leaving with a mountainous amount of family, memories I will cherish for the rest of my life and knowledge about the world and leadership I could not have gained without this conference. “ASLFL took me out of my comfort zone and threw me into an environment full of people with one goal: to make the world a better place. Here, I’ve been given hope that tomorrow can be better-that the world is never beyond saving so long as there are people like us and programs like this.”
Samantha, Victor Valley High School, USA
“During my time here at Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life, I have changed for the better in many ways. I have gained confidence, intelligence, patience and the ability to lead. We had many speakers who taught me about opportunity, experience and myself. We had group activities that challenged us and pushed us out of our comfort zones. I made many friends who I’ve learned incredible things from and who I’ve had some amazing times with. I came here quiet, timid and shy and honestly intimidated by meeting so many new people at once. Little did I know I would leave confident and proud that I attended with amazing memories that will help me to grow as a person as the years go on. I met many different people from all different corners of the world, who told me about culture and experience. To attend this seminar is a rare and powerful experience. I am so glad that I attended the ASLFL and greatly recommend it to everyone.”

“It broke a lot of stereotypes I had in my head of certain cultures, and really made me realise how quick we can all be to judge others just from outside impressions (television, social media, etc).It showed me that it’s really important to not to generalise others from where they’re from or their sexuality/religion/age, and to focus more on getting to know them as a person.”
Ellen, Piper’s Hill College, Ireland
“The diverse selection of speakers and panelists at this year’s conference offered a well-rounded view of leaders from all cultures and careers. My personal favorite speaker must be Ms. Catherine Byrne TD who gave us a detailed account of her journey to becoming a Minister of State and how despite her respectable position she still maintains her inspirational mission and ethos of helping those less fortunate on a grassroots level. A true leader by every definition of the word.”

“The guest speakers delivered speeches that were very inspirational and helped us understand that our goals are possible if we put our minds to them and we should always try things that are outside our comfort-zone. We were also taught that hard work is necessary for success and that even though there may be hard times in our lives which make our goals look far away we have to push through the hard times as the good ones will come.”
Zoe, St. Dominic’s Grammar School for Girls, Northern Ireland
“I thought the public speaking was the most challenging aspect of the program however after I had done it I felt it was a great experience.”

“The personality test while also enlightening myself on my own mannerisms did the exact same to shed light of other people and how different people could react to a similar situation thus making me understand their reactions better.”
Katie, Westtown School, USA
“I learned that I am stronger than I led myself to believe. When I first read the email saying that I would be having to give a speech, my first instinct was to back out of the conference. I felt so much fear after reading the email that all I wanted to do was cry. After dithering over whether to go or not for about a week, I decided to face the challenge rather than back away from it. As it turns out, the speech went smoothly and I successfully conquered one of my biggest fears.”
“Leadership is not something you can ignore. I plan to use my leadership skills that ASLFL perfected to help induce a positive change in my community and among my peers, and also bringing this mentality to wherever I decide to attend college!”

“The course changed my communication with the speech of Alan Shortt. This offered me a completely different way to communicate to a group. The thing to tell stories to tell something was great and the circle to speak, hear and think helped me too.”
Christoph, BBZ-Bad Segeberg, Germany
“It is because of your belief and your generosity that we, the Palestinian delegation actually made it to the conference. 7 days may not sound much for change, but in fact, I can say on behalf of all of the delegate we have changed a whole bunch. Be it our attitude, our personality or any other aspect, when we returned home our parents pointed all the positive changes they noticed in us. We went to Ireland as trainees but we went back to our home countries as leaders. The influential speakers, the team work, and even the cheers all helped in creating a stronger version of ourselves.”

“The Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life program has never failed my expectation of being amazing. This year’s staff showed an abundant amount of care and support, whether they were our group leader or not. I feel, that as a student coming from last year’s program, I had a lot to compare about. The friends I made here, I can literally call my family. I met people I would never have met unless it was through this program. This experience is priceless and makes me want to make the world as united as this program.”

Meeting so many interesting individuals from different cultures, classes and creeds was an amazing opportunity that will stay with me for life. “Over the conference, I experienced something truly unique, the opportunity to meet a group of amazing individuals. Even though we are all from different countries and backgrounds, we got along like the closest of friends and I’m sure because of this conference, we can walk away with friends for life. Throughout this week we all came to realize how amazing all of our countries are. From the awesome costumes and instruments of the Nigerian delegation, to the outstanding food and national dances of Palestine. At culture night yesterday, 100% of us joined in on the dances and that just shows how well we all interact with one another. We are all from different places but we have many things in common and one of those is, to make this world a better place.”

Comments on the 2011 ASLFL International Youth Leadership Conference at NUI Maynooth (July 24-29, 2011)
The skills that were taught, from the first day to the last one, will stick with me forever. Being aware of your strengths and weakness and improving on the weakness to be a better leader. As well as, being the change you want to see in the world is something that was echoed throughout the week. However, the one question that was constantly being asked at the conference that I found hard to answer was: “If you ruled the world, what is one thing you would change? My answer now would to have the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Conference program worldwide. I truly did have an incredible time at the conference and if I could share this experience with everyone in the world, I would.”
